Aten chosen as MPCC’s Administrator of the Year

Mid-Plains Community College is proud to announce that Shawn Aten, Director of Physical Resources in North Platte, has been selected as its 2025 Administrator of the Year. Aten received the honor during the Nebraska Community College Association’s annual awards ceremony on Nov. 2.
Aten’s name carries deep roots in the history of Mid-Plains Community College. His grandfather, Kenneth Aten, served as Superintendent and President of the former Mid-Plains Voc-Tech College. Shawn credits his grandfather’s passion for education and leadership as a guiding influence in his own career.
A graduate of MPCC with a pre-engineering degree, Aten went on to earn a degree from the University of Nebraska at Kearney before beginning a successful career in the construction industry. He returned to MPCC in January 2018, where he now oversees campus facilities, manages the procurement of physical resources and services, and serves as project manager for construction and renovation projects—all while leading a diverse team of skilled professionals.
“Every project, no matter how big or small is important to me,” said Aten. “Being able to support local education and contribute to the mission of the institution is why I am here.”
Throughout his tenure, Aten has played a key role in numerous campus improvements. Among his many contributions, the ongoing construction of the new Electrical Technology building stands out as one of his most meaningful projects. The facility will expand MPCC’s capacity to serve more students and strengthen partnerships with local high schools to provide career exploration opportunities.
Humbled by the recognition, Aten was quick to share credit with his team.
“It’s very humbling to receive this award,” Aten said. “This honor recognizes not just me, but the entire physical resources staff who dedicate their time to keeping the institution moving forward.”
